Music of Sandal Castle

The Battle of Wakefield 1460 was a bleak day for England. The legal heir to the throne was killed. His 17 year old son was murdered after the battle of over. This features on the Sandal Castle DVD as an exposition of what probably happened. The music tells the story too, as the horror of betrayal turns victory into disaster for the house of York. The feature concludes with a song called "Edward's Lament". The Edward in question is the son of that heir to the throne and the older brother of that 17 year old. He would fight. He would win the crown back at Towton (another even more bloody field). But before he became King Edward IV he must have had regrets and the certain knowledge that nothing could bring his family back together on this side of the grave.

"Building Sandal's Castles" is the second feature on the Sandal Castle DVD. It sets aside the tragic battle which immortalised Sandal in history and takes the castle instead as a case-study of castle development over centuries. Beginning with the Norman Conquest and ending with the modifications made by Edward IV's brother, King Richard III, we take a special journey to rebuild the castle once more.
